Rock Shelf Necklace (Prehnite)
Inspired by seaside rock shelves at the Northern tip of Kings Beach in Caloundra, Queensland. Each piece in this series is unique.
The pendant depicts worm holes made by the playful persistence of the sea, cradling one green sapphire and finished matte, it hangs off centre to the left or right clavicle. Round prehnite beads display their natural mossy inclusions, strung on sturdy silicon coated stainless steel cable and interspersed with sterling silver stoppers. The hand forged shepherds hook can also be worn to the side, so both the pendant and hook are displayed at each clavicle.
The story of the stones: These sapphires were found by women miners in Madagascar, who fossick in areas around their villages in order to secure an income for their families. Their purchase by my gemologist, and subsequently me, means the women were paid a fair price for their stones, rather than selling to dealers, with an ambiguous and long supply chain, for a fraction of the price.
Total length is 53cm.
